Veneers have a reputation problem. A lot of people picture them as huge, chiclet-bright slabs that scream "veneers" from across the room. That used to be the only option. Today, the materials and the techniques are completely different — and a well-done case looks like teeth, not like dentistry.
What a veneer actually is
A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain bonded to the front of a tooth. Modern porcelain comes in dozens of translucencies and natural shade variations, so we can match the surrounding teeth or, if you'd like, lift the whole smile a few shades while still keeping it believable.
How conservative they can be
The old-school approach removed a significant layer of enamel from every tooth being veneered. Today, in many cases, we prep minimally — sometimes just a polish — and the veneer is bonded onto the existing enamel. This matters because enamel is irreplaceable. The less we remove, the more long-term tooth we preserve.
What they fix beautifully
- Chipped or worn edges from years of grinding or accidents.
- Small gaps that don't need orthodontics to close.
- Discoloration that whitening can't reach — internal stains, tetracycline, old composites.
- Slightly rotated teeth where the patient doesn't want full Invisalign treatment.
- Asymmetric edges that make a smile feel "off" even though you can't say why.
What the process looks like
A typical case is two visits. The first is for design and minimal preparation — we'll show you exactly how the new smile will look before any commitment, using a wax model or digital preview. The second visit, two to three weeks later, is for placement and final adjustments. There's almost no downtime, and most patients walk out the same afternoon eating normally.
Where veneers are not the right answer
Veneers can't fix everything. If the underlying bite is off, or there's active gum disease, or you grind heavily without a guard, we treat those first. A veneer placed on an unstable foundation is a short-term result, and we'd rather get it right.
Our take
Veneers don't have to be dramatic to be transformational. Subtle shape corrections, balanced edges, and a softly brighter shade can take years off a smile while keeping it entirely yours. If you've been curious, the first conversation is just a conversation — we'll show you options and tradeoffs honestly, and there's no pressure to move forward.
